You bet we tried the Hot Honey Fried Yardbird

310 Malcolm X Blvd, New York, NY 10027, USA

Still continuing the Buzzfeed Worth It tour by going to Red Rooster Harlem which was featured in their Fried Chicken NYC episode. I think it's best to go and watch that episode to see the lengthy process of how this is created. So much love and time goes into making this and I cannot give it justice here. First we ordered the Yep Chicken n Waffle which was a huge piece of sweet spicy fried chicken on a sweet potato waffle. My god this was tasty. The waffle was actually the star here. Super crispy and fluffy inside with a really deep flavour. The chicken was really crispy and SUPER moist inside. Like butter.

Next was Marcus' famous cornbread. Yes still addicted to cornbread and will forever be from this trip. Super moist and fluffy inside with a crispy golden crust. Fantastic. This butter that came with it was also brilliant.

And the star of the show is the Hot Honey Yardbird. This came was 'dirty mash and gravy' as well as some greens. So the chicken is fried twice and then coated in this sweet spicy honey that forms a crunchy sweet coating all over. And it was absolutely brilliant. I have never had such crispy skin on fried chicken, it wasn't crunchy like chips it was crisp and light like snapping toffee. Again the chicken inside was incredibly moist and melty (I think they must brine the chicken in buttermilk too). The mash and gravy was brilliant with this. Gave heaps of flavour and richness. Also the cornbread was good for scooping up the gravy at the end. The greens were pretty good but I can't go past how brilliant the chicken was. My hopes were very very high and I think they were met. Only thing is, this was pretty damn pricey. We didn't go overboard with ordering, but the dishes were pretty expensive. The restaurant was more fine dining that we thought and I guess if you're after a more high end big spend meal this is great.
